Rear Hub Rachet Clean & Grease

Tools Needed

  • Isopropyl
  • Nitrile Gloves (recommended)
  • Cloth, or small brush
  • Freehub grease (Dumonde Tech)

STEP 1: Remove freehub

Leaving the Cassette on the freehub, pull the freehub & end cap off of the rear hub axle by hand.

STEP 2: Remove rachet, spring & spacer

Remove the springs, the spacer, and the ratchets by hand. The inside ratchet will come up when you pull on the black spacer.

STEP 3: Clean rachet assembly

Using the Isopropyl and the cloth/brush clean the rachets, spring, spacer thoroughly. Try to get as much grit and dirty grease out of the rachet teeth as possible. Do the same for the rachet interfaces within the hub shell and freehub body.

STEP 4: Grease rachet assembly

Once you all the rachet components and interfaces are clean, apply a fresh layer of freehub grease or oil to your ratchets, the ratchet interfaces, the spacer and the spring.

The maximum amount of freehub grease is 2.5ml (half of the supplied Grease packet). Excess freehub grease can cause poor engagement and potentially damage the rachet teeth.

Note: It is not recommended to grease excessively or not at all. Ideally everything within the freehub assembly has a thin layer of grease on it.

STEP 5: Install Rachet assembly, freehub, & End cap

Slide the spacer onto the axle, then the ratchets, then the spring.

Next push the freehub into place, ensure they all mesh nicely together as you press it into place by hand. The end cap need to press onto the axle in this processes to hold the freehub in place. Ensure the end cap is fully seated before installing the wheel into the bike.
